We always talk about 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆, to refer to a new economic model that provides for a low environmental impact at all stages of development.
In order to implement it, it is necessary to analyze the damage caused by one’s industrial activity and then apply green remedies that reduce the impact on the environment.
In addition to having entrusted our energy resource to solar panels, our “green economy” is also based on the use of 𝗣𝗟𝗟𝗔 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 for the production of medical devices.
ECO-FRIENDLY BIOPLASTIC MANUFACTURING: EXAMPLES AND ADVANTAGES
Even in the medical field we are therefore moving towards this green trend, looking for new sustainable materials. The PLLA favours the patient, facilitating the post-operative course and at the same time, favours the environment, because it is produced from renewable resources, such as corn – which is the cheapest – sugar cane, rice, beet.
The PLLA is a polymer with exceptional properties, increasingly used in the medical field. The first advantage is its ability to be absorbed in the human body: its relatively high mechanical resistance and its speed of degradation and resorption make the PLLA appropriate for most musculoskeletal applications, with particular use in pediatric surgery.
For many years, in fact, resorbable implants have clinically brought numerous advantages. The first positive aspect concerns the support of bone consolidation during the healing phase. In addition, products made of PLLA material, thanks to their intrinsic ability to be reabsorbed into the human body, don’t need to be removed and therefore a second removal intervention is not necessary. In addition, PLLA, unlike metallic materials, is MRI-Compatible so it is possible to perform diagnostic imaging safely. Finally, the use of PLLA prevents the release of metal ions into bone tissues.
Bioplastic manufacturing: PLLA stands out from other materials for its Green features:

3. Bio Compatible: does not produce toxic or carcinogenic effects on the human tissues
4. It saves energy because it requires 25 to 55% less energy for production
Among the products made with this material, in the extremities field, there are screws, plates, pins, plates for the maxillofacial and vertebral surgery.
PLLA plastic devices are manufactured by an injection molding machine with the positioning of the manufacturing equipment within contamination-controlled environments (Clean Rooms). In such environments it is possible to manufacture different types of plastic medical devices material ensuring a high standard of chemical, particle and microbiological cleanliness.
